Mr James Bliss

Consultant Knee Surgeon

Mr James Bliss is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon with over 20 years of consultant practice and more than 30 years of surgical experience.

He is widely recognised for his expertise in managing complex knee conditions, particularly in patients with challenging ligament injuries, failed previous surgery, and high-demand sporting goals.

Mr Bliss specialises in advanced knee surgery, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscus surgery, osteotomy, kneecap (patellofemoral) surgery, and joint preservation procedures in younger patients.

He has a particular reputation for treating complex soft tissue and sports-related knee injuries, as well as undertaking revision surgery – cases where previous procedures have not been successful and where treatment requires a high level of surgical precision and experience.

Patients often seek out Mr Bliss for second opinions and for the management of difficult or high-risk cases. His approach is focused on careful assessment, clear communication, and tailoring treatment plans to each individual, whether that involves optimising non-surgical care or delivering highly specialised surgical solutions.

Mr Bliss graduated with honours in Medicine from the University of London in 1990. He went on to achieve the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), where he was awarded the Walter Mercer Gold Medal for excellence, one of the highest accolades in orthopaedic training. He completed higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics and undertook an international fellowship in knee surgery at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, further refining his expertise.

He is based in the NHS at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, one of London’s leading trauma centres, where he was appointed as a Consultant in 2002. He is now the Director of the Knee Service, leading one of the busiest and most respected knee units in the UK.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Bliss plays a key role in training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. He is a Senior Examiner for the FRCS (Orthopaedics), contributes to national and international teaching, and is actively involved in research and education in complex knee surgery.

In his private practice in Central London, Mr Bliss provides comprehensive care for all knee conditions, with particular expertise in complex ligament reconstruction, and revision knee replacement surgery.

Other conditions he has a specific interest in are meniscus surgery, osteotomy, revision ligament surgery, young adult knee preservation surgery and kneecap surgery.

His practice attracts patients seeking specialist input for demanding cases, with a focus on achieving the best possible outcomes and helping patients return to the activities that matter most to them. He is a highly experienced knee consultant, providing exceptional treatment to his patients.

In both his NHS practice based Guy’s Hospital and his private medical knee practice in Central London, he provides second opinion and surgical support for a number of knee surgical colleagues, who refer complex cases to him.
